We have as program here for those who wish to participate, called the "Inmate Work Program". If someone wishes to, he or she is permitted to go out on the truck and clean the litter up off of the sides of the road. This part of the program helps keep our county looking clean. In 2008, we gained 1209 miles, worked 247.5 hours, and picked up 1708 bags of trash. When we are cleaning up on a State-aid road, the State of Mississippi reimburses us for the deputy who takes the inmates out to work and pays us approximately 54.5 cents per mile. On county roads, the County pays for these things, but the state still supplies our vehicle.
Participating in this program helps inmates get fines "worked off" quicker if they are having to serve time on old fines. They may also work on the various jobs that Mr. Kenneth has going such as the cafeteria or the exercise yard. None of the inmates are ever forced to do any of these jobs. It is strickly voluntary.
Other times, a judge may order people to come in who owe the county money but are off of work or do not have a job at that particular time to get his or her fines paid off.
